August sure went by fast, didn't it? Good riddance, I say! I'm ready for the temperature to not be near or above 90 all day!
I've always loved autumn. The colors, the smell of cinnamon and clove, and the best holidays of the year. While not everything should be pumpkin flavored, I am looking forward to pumpkin ice cream and pumpkin soup. Don't forget to enjoy spiced apples, either!
Soon, it'll be time to cut down the sunflowers growing in my yard, and I honestly should have already planted my garlic for next year, but it can wait til it feels properly autumn outside. I don't know who planted it, but we also have some garlic growing by the porch at Channing. For some reason, it reminds me of Harriet.
We're getting into "Spooky Season," which is what those of us who love this holiday season call it. Halloween, Samhain, All Saints and All Souls Days, El Día de Muertos. It's the time of year when communities would remember and honor those who came before them. Sometimes, it is to keep memories alive, but it is also to teach each other about the community's history. I think about that, when I look at the board over the guest registry area. There's a good handful of pictures there, some folks I know, and more than a few that I never got to meet. I'd like to see, for next month's Channel, some memories ya'll are willing to share about those folks, or anyone else who was a friend or member of Channing who has passed on. Consider taking a few moments and sending Eva an email with a remembrance or two, and I'm sure we'll all enjoy remembering and learning about those who made Channing what it is, so we can continue to carry that into the future.
In the meantime, I will be looking forward to crunchy leaves and hot apple cider.
