Church Groups

Channing UU Church offers a wide variety of groups whose main objectives are to strengthen the congregation by drawing us into mutual ministry with an emphasis on caring for each other in an open, supportive and nurturing environment. Church groups meet once, or more, a month.
They have a common theme. There is a leader, and possibly a co-leader for each group. Church groups are always open. You do not have to be a Channing member or attendee to be a member of one of these small groups. You are welcome to attend any group without feeling obligated to attend Channing.

The Gaia Circle

The Gaia Circle is a Channing Covenant Group of members and friends established to explore spiritual expression in an atmosphere inclusive of earth based traditions. They explore the richness offered in myths, legends and celebrations of many cultures and traditions. The Gaia Circle supports church members and friends in their individual searches for meaning by providing a forum for discussion of spiritual concerns and a sharing of personal interests and experiences. The Channing Gaia Group plants and maintains the Memorial Garden.

Spiral Circle CUUPS

The Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (or CUUPs) is an independent affiliate of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Spiral Circle CUUPs is sponsored by Channing UU Church in Edmond, OK. It is a welcoming place for those people who identify with the Pagan path and want to explore, participate and educate themselves.
Spiral Circle CUUPs is a family based group of eclectic pagans who recognize all Pagan traditions. We gather to celebrate the major Sabbats (pagan holidays) eight times a year and see this as a time for fellowship, learning, and connecting ourselves with the turning of the Wheel.
Our rituals include both the God and Goddess as we recognize the natural balance in life. Men, women, and children (above the age of 10) are welcome.
Please check the church calendar on this site for our next Sabbat or CUUPs gathering.

Channing Literary Discussion Covenant Group

The Channing Literary Discussion Covenant Group usually meets the first Tuesday of each month, September through May at 7:00 pm. The group members decide the discussion topic. Discussions include movies, books, poetry, art, music and more. The meeting is held at Channing. Many months include a second meeting at a member's home to view a video movie.
Past discussions have included the book and/or movie versions of
" To Kill a Mockingbird", "The Shipping News", etc.
The Literary Discussion Covenant Group begins and ends each meeting with an inspirational reading. There is also a brief check-in at the beginning of the meeting.
The group may meet on an irregular basis in the summer for museum trips, movies, etc.
The Channing Literary Discussion Group also maintains the Church Library.

The Channing Stitchers

The Channing Stitchers is a covenant group that meets to work on individual sewing projects, such as quilting, knitting, or embroidery.
It’s a time for building friendships and encouraging personal growth as the stitchers share the joys and concerns of their daily lives.
The Stitchers meet the second Saturday of each month at 2 PM at the home of a member. Our service to the church & community is supporting the Religious Education group at the holidays, and by providing children’s clothing to the Hope Center.

The Channing Writers

If you are interested in writing, or have written, this is the group to join. The Channing Writers Covenant Group usually meets the fourth Monday of each month, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Meetings are held either at Channing, or in a home of a member. The group members decide the discussion topic. Discussions include writing styles, topics and more.

The Channing Choir

The Channing Choir harmonizes every Thursday evening at the church from 7:30-8:30 p.m. We practice upcoming hymns so we can help lead the congregation, and we also prepare pieces from Bach to Brubeck which we perform periodically. A favorite director of theater and choir in the Clinton-Weatherford area, Roland Decker has retired to Oklahoma City and is our choir director who works with us twice monthly, accompanied by Peggy Payne, pianist for Channing and Principal Keyboard with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Our Principles

There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm
and promote:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;

A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;

The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
